Messages - (NO AUDIO). Black and white footage of moving water, which is shown in isolation from its surroundings, almost as if through a keyhole, is from a late-night shoot on the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts. I invite the viewer to experience the relationship between light and movement. In the digital age, we have largely lost that connection to nature’s rhythms and with each other. Over time, our contemporary conscious connection with nature and water shifted from a deeper experiential relationship to a user-friendly functional interaction. We see the water as separate from ourselves. As this phenomenon deepens, growing more disconnected as we become expediently glued to our screens questions arise. What have we gained and what have we lost?

From visuals of dancing light on the inky surface I wanted to create a singular piece that explored this interplay between moonlight and the water’s dark surface. The ebb and flow between recognizable water and visual patterning suggests the formation of some kind of calligraphic writing system (almost recognizable). It is the fluctuation between the conscious mind and the contemplative intuition.  This activates a search into the hidden qualities of things not explained but experienced. Although I begin with a general idea of what I wanted the work to be, I always left room for improvisation and growth.
